Goji Juice and Goji Berries - the real deal

by Rebecca Cooper

We are often told that it is important to include foods that are high in antioxidants into our daily diets. However, this is often difficult as these foods are often hard to find and sometimes taste pretty bad. One source that is very high in these antioxidants are goji berries. But unlike a lot of other foods, goji berries are actually very nice as well as being so nutritious.

Goji berries are also pretty versatile. In Asia, goji berries are often consumed in teas or soups. This is less common in Europe and USA where goji berries are more often eaten either by themselves or in a multitude of recipes (even including things like Goji berry mince pies!)

This is clearly one of the reasons why goji berries are becoming so popular in the west… they are not only super nutritious, but they can also be consumed in a multitude of different ways.

Goji Berries are grown far up in the Himalayan Mountains and are grown on the border of China and Tibet.

The quality varies greatly depending upon where you get your goji berries from, so it is important to do your research. Make sure you get berries that are grown in areas of Tibet or in the mountain regions of China (not from low land areas). Organic certified Goji berries are also recommended.

I get my Tibetan Goji Berries from one of the best online goji websites (just do a Google search for “buy goji berries online” and you will find several) - you can be assured of the quality and the fact that they are tested and proven radiation free. Why not try out goji berries and get yourself into living longer now?

Goji Berry berries also come in 2 types of mediums one being a hard and dried Goji berry and then there is the soft Goji berry. There is no known difference between the effects on the potency of the Goji berry in which ever form, its all down to personal preference and intended use.

Another form of Goji Berries is Goji Juice and Goji drinks. These are particularly popular in USA and Canada (mainly due to a company called Freelife). This could well be worth trying if you feel you might prefer the juice to the actual berries themselves.

Other “superfoods” that are often mentioned in the same breath as Goji berries are that such as acai, spirulina and mangosteen. But companies promoting these sort of products often do so in a very aggressive and misleading way, so act with caution and don’t pay attention to too many medical claims.

Water - Why It’s Good To Drink 8 Glasses A Day

by Maria Esposito

Usually about two and a half litres of water is needed each day for a reasonably sedentary adult to replace the total water loss that occurs through skin, lungs, faeces and urine, unless they are in an unusual environment.

Just under half of this should be in the form of drinks such as water or cold herbal teas and just under a litre from food. The remaining 300ml is created by the body from its own metabolic processes.

If you don’t drink enough water, this is what happens.

1. The pulse rate goes up and there is an increase in the rectal temperature

2. Respiration increases

3. Numbness and tingling are experienced in the extremities

4. Increase in blood concentration

5. Reduced blood volume and more difficult circulation of the blood

The difficulty and inadequacy of the circulation of blood under these conditions leads to:

1. breathing problems

2. gastro-intestinal upsets

3. nauseousness and loss of appetite

4. if it carries on for an extended period it will cause problems with muscle movement and unstable emotions

In an animal study, where water was restricted the animals were highly irritable and in some cases bad tempered.

Thirst

It has been demonstrated that under intense physical activity a male will only drink voluntarily around 50% as much water as what is required to replace losses from urine and sweat. Only after rest and food do the cravings for the required amount of water return to replace the fluid deficit.

Hot Drinks

Ingestion of hot drinks may cause internal body temperature to rise, which will result in sweating in order to cool the body down. Hot drinks are sometimes used in medical practice when it is desired either to temporarily increase body temperature of induce sweating. Therefore cold or cool drinks are preferred to hot drinks to replace fluid during the day, especially if the hot drinks are the only fluid daily intake.

Sugary drinks

During physical activities lasting less than 90 minutes, water is generally the beverage of choice, however, the inclusion of small concentrations of carbohydrate (6%-8% carbohydrate) have been shown to better sustain power output over water alone during physical activities that produce fatigue in 60 minutes or longer.

Not many of us know that the coffee benefits for one’s health, if you are having a cup of coffee everyday. It doesn’t matter if it is served hot or cold since it contains the same amount of caffeine when made at the cafe or produced at home.

Some of the coffee benefits that you should know

Many Americans are now overweight, that’s what some studies have pointed out. For those who are having this problem should be more careful with what they take. This is because the chances that they are suffering from Type 2 diabetes are higher. However, there are a few solutions to it, we know that if you exercise and follow a weight loss program, you can improve the problem. Another good news too, a study by researchers at Harvard also shows the coffee benefits of consuming more than 6 cups a day can actually lower the chances by more than 54%, so can reduce diabetes.

Another study done by Vanderbilt University has proven another coffee benefits where regular coffee drinkers especially men can prevent people from developing Parkinson’s disease by 80%. A such study made by the same school showed that consuming it can also reduce the chances of developing gallstones and liver problems.

Research has also proven that coffee comprises certain antioxidants that may be beneficial for the body. It can help people who are agitated by sending signals to the brain that will make them feel good just like eating a bar of chocolate, gum or ice cream.

Coffee is believed to help in making the drinker mentally alert, most of us already know this coffee benefits. More to coffee benefits are; if coffee is taken moderately, it is possible to stop a headache, make one feel good and even prevent cavities. There you go, it just goes to show that all of us have to do more than just brushing and flossing to take care of our teeth.

Though coffee has been found to be able to assist an athlete perform well in a certain sport, anyone who uses it since it believed to have the same qualities like those found in steroids, and if it has been proven through a urine test, the Olympic committee and other governing bodies will drop them.

For those who take in decaffeinated coffee, however, there is a word of warning. Studies have shown that decaffeinated coffee can increase the LDL, which is better known as bad cholesterol in the body. Therefore ask yourself, do you want to increase your LDL or just enjoy coffee benefits by sticking with the caffeinated version which is much safer for us who want to have a cup of coffee.

Other studies are presently being done to discover if coffee has other health benefits. Who knows? There may come a time that the plant itself can be useful in curing other diseases instead of getting it in its final product, which is either in brewed or bean form.

So at least we now know there are coffee benefits for health.

A Healthy High Fiber Diet

by Louise Servage

The most important part of living a healthy life style is how you and your family eat. A visit to your doctor is the first thing that you should do if your diet is a concern to you. Have your doctor give you a physical check up to confirm that the diet that you want to commence is safe for you.

Designing your own diet is possible, with the right information, but be sure that you know what nutrients and vitamins are in the foods that you select. Balanced your diet, if it isn’t balanced, even if the food that you eat is considered to be healthy, too much of a good thing can still be bad for you. It is possible to take aspects of different diets and combine them.

Remember, variety is the spice of life and if you don’t have variety in you meals you will find it very easy to make excuses to justify why you should quit your diet. Even cheese and wine are good for you in moderation.

High fibre fruit and vegetables should be prioritised when formulating a diet. A good diet should include generous portions of high fibre fruit and vegetables. Fibre is sometimes ignored when deciding on a diet. Whatever your body type, fibre is very important; also take into account your age and weight. High fibre foods are necessary to help you be regular.

Eating high fibre fruit and vegetables, will improve your health and wellbeing. High fibre fruit and vegetables will also help get rid of toxins and waste from your system. Fibre is an important issue and it puzzles this writer as to why it is lacking in some diets?

Some high fibre products aren’t very palatable so it is hard to convince people to consume those products. Many people don’t like the taste of the supplements that are high in fibre, so they avoid them. Another cause of a low fibre intake is a lack of grains in your diet. You would be surprised what foods are high in fibre, just take a look at the label.

Do some research on the Internet, you are sure to find fruit and vegetables you love that are high in fibre. There are plenty of fruit and vegetables that are high in fibre, eat a couple of servings of fruit each day and you’ll have sufficient fibre.

The secret to maximising the fibre in fruits and vegetables that are high in fibre is to eat them raw. Many people will tell you that they eat lots of high fibre fruit and vegetables. But they cook them; this breaks down or reduces the fibre content.

So include some raw vegetables and uncooked fruit in your diet, and then you can be sure that you will be getting the fibre that you need.

Allergy Drops Instead Of Shots

by Dorothy Medlum

Hate going to the allergist to receive those weekly shots? There is some good news for you! Today many allergists are looking into other alternative methods of treatment for their patients.

Allergy drops have been discovered to do the same thing that the shots have done in the past. The nice thing with the drops, you can do them yourself, at home. No more trips to the doctor.

Allergy shots are comprised of diluted versions of the allergens the patient has a reaction to. Usually, the ration is about 100,000 to one. In some cases, ear, nose, and throat doctors use a dilution of a million to one.

In addition to the time off work and school on a weekly basis to get the shots, the waiting and returning consume a lot of the patient’s time. The costs of the doctor visit on a weekly basis add up to a very high sum also.

The injections can be paid by insurance, but even with the benefit of insurance, the co-pay still can add up to a large amount rather quickly.

One must also consider the costs of these shots. Although insurance does pay for the allergy shots, there is also a co-pay the patient has to satisfy. In so doing, this adds up rather quickly.

With the usage of the sublingual allergy drops, the patient visits to the doctor are limited to two to three times a year to receive the prescription. The drops are used at home, under the tongue. Less time spent at the doctor, and no pain.

In a number of patients using the drops, there have been rare times when a patient reacts to the drops as they react to the injections. But, compared, the advantages to the drops far outweigh the need to be in a doctor’s office every week receiving an injection.

by Kurt Schmitt

Are you ready to make a change in your life but need to find your weight loss motivation? These four simple rules will help you maintain your desire for change. They will provide a framework for success that will carry you throughout your weight loss journey.

Know the numbers — The first rule for weight loss is to know your numbers. Step on the scale, but not constantly, and not even daily; once a week is sufficient.

Use a simple tape measure and note the measurements of your upper arms, thighs, hips, waist, and chest. Be as accurate as possible with this. To maintain your weight loss motivation, you’ll want to celebrate even the smallest decrease in size.

Keeping a log — The next rule we’re going to discuss may be the most important one of all. Keep a journal! Recording your personal numbers as well as the food you eat and the activity your perform will have a huge payoff.

Use the journal to record interesting weight loss facts that you come across. Record your emotions during the weight loss process. The journal enables you to discover patterns in your behavior and offers encouragement when your motivation wanes.

Research it — One of the most helpful rules for weight loss motivation is to do your research! Read books about dieting and browse the Internet for appropriate websites. Learn the food pyramid guidelines and be able to recognize proper portion sizes.

When you do your research, you’ll come across many interesting facts that you’ll want to keep. Your journal is the perfect spot for you to have them easily accessible. You’ll be surprised at how much your weight loss motivation is boosted when you read a new perspective on old information.

Know your outcome — Finally, weight loss motivation requires you to have a vision. You must be able to “see” yourself the way you’d like to be. Spend a little time each day meditating or reflecting on how you would like to reinvent yourself.

Each day, spend time reflecting on exactly what it will take for you to reach your goal. How will you have to behave? What will you have to eat? How will you deal with temptation? It’s all in the details.

So there you have it… four of the rules for sustaining your motivation. By following these simple guidelines, you’ll dramatically increase your chances of experiencing a successful weight loss journey!

Rose Otto and Absolute Oils: Healing Aromatherapy For Our Times

by Tarah Cech

Here’s a little tip for all you natural health enthusiasts out there wanting to make a difference: now may be the time to try a Rose essential oil. Roses have always been great symbols of love and beauty, and the potency which nature created is readily available in pure Rose oils. Rose essential oil is considered one of the most profoundly healing natural aromatics by leading aromatherapists. It has an incredible number of diverse and effective healing applications, it is easy to use, and its aroma is loved by nearly everyone.

Now more than ever, in these challenging times around the world, the healing power of Rose is most needed. It might even be considered that it’s anti-viral and beauty enhancing effects are minor when compared to the dramatic heart opening action this oil has. By opening the heart chakra, this natural medicine can help us both to give and receive more love. And depending on its application, it can also deal with illness and make us more beautiful. So what is true Rose oil, and how can we make the best use of it?

Rose essential oil is a remarkable liquid. It’s really an incredible concentration of Rose flowers: it takes an amazing amount of Roses to make just a few drops. On average, under the most favorable conditions, the yield of Rose oil is one kilogram for every 2,500 kilos of Roses. it can take more than four times this amount of Roses to make the same amount of oil if the weather has been less than favorable. Think of it — It can be hard to imagine even what 2,500 kilos (over 5,000 pounds) of Roses looks like! And the oil itself is naturally a mixture of over a three hundred individual molecules, many of which have yet to be identified through scientific methods. It is this fantastic combination of extreme concentration combined with Mother Nature’s alchemy which imparts Rose oil’s incredible healing value.

Two types of Rose oils are commonly available: Rose Absolute, the less expensive of the two, is a liquid solvent extract. The Absolute smells most like the flower, being produced under cool temperatures, leaving most of the natural constituents intact. The yield of Absolute is relatively high, thus it is the somewhat less expensive variety. Rose Otto is this steam distilled oil, and the true ‘essential oil’ of Rose. While the Absolute retains the deep red color of the flower, the Otto is clear or slightly pale yellow and has its own unique aroma. The scent of Otto is brilliant and uplifting, with brilliant high notes and a subtle sweetness. The most famous of Rose growing countries is Bulgaria, producing the most sought after varieties of each oil type. Rose Otto is also produced in large quantities in Turkey, while the Absolute is also commonly extracted from flowers grown in Morocco.

When looking at the oils’ the therapeutic applications, it is important to take into account the entire mind body/complex — rather than divorcing the two which is so often done in modern medicine. Rose essential oil is very active on a physiological level, however it is when its action on the emotions and spirit are taken into account that Rose really shines. Otto is a strong antiviral, being used by many folks for its efficacy in treating herpes and shingles. Despite its potency, it is gentle enough for undiluted application to the skin for this use. Rose oils are also profoundly effective tonics for the female reproductive system; they are said to enhance fertility and bring about health for the uterus and ovaries. For these needs, a dilute formula of 3% Rose oil can be massaged into the lower abdomen on a frequent basis.

The most common therapeutic application may be for healing the skin, as Rose extracts are found in many of the world’s finest cosmetics. Rose Otto can reduce inflammation, heal capillaries, hydrate and soften, and act as it an effective astringent and antiseptic. Including a 1% concentration in any skincare formula can vastly improve its beauty enhancing ability. Rose water (’leftover’ from the distillation process) is an excellent beauty care preparation unto itself. The water, called ‘Rose hydrosol’ is often used with a cotton ball as a cleansing tonic for the face.

Perhaps the greatest potential of Rose oil lies in its heart-opening action. Both the Otto and Absolutes have this effect, though the Otto may be more dramatic. Users report just a drop on their wrists or solar plexus has a profound effect on their emotions, imparting a more open, friendly nature. Indeed, Rose essential oil is one of the most important antidepressants in aromatherapy. Its sweet cooling nature works to counter anger and anxiety we see so often in our fast-paced culture. Rose alleviates ‘hot’ conditions of the liver and gall bladder which can make a person irritable; the combination of energetic action on the center of our emotions and on the flow of mind/body/spirit (chi) energy make it the first choice for psycho-emotional aromatherapy for our times.

Employing the healing properties of Rose oils is fun and easy to do. Both the Otto and Absolute are safe, and can be used undiluted whenever desired. They are both considered highly potent, and diluting them in a carrier oil will not reduce their efficacy however. A 5 to 10% dilution is most often used for personal perfume, a 1 to 3% dilution as a massage oil, and a 1 to 2% dilution and beauty care preparations. Either oil is excellent for use in even the simplest of aromatherapy diffusers, by themselves or blended with other aromatics of your choice. There are other aromatherapy methods of course, and you should use your intuition to guide you for the most appropriate technique.

The essential oils of Rose are considered among the most transformative and aromatherapy, and effect which seems a natural evolution of Nature’s symbol of love and beauty. Mankind has developed the technological know-how to put the power of thousands upon thousands of Roses in one tiny bottle, and transport it around the world almost instantly. It is Nature however, who developed this fantastic medicine millennia ago. If you’d like a little more beauty and love in your life, you might consider giving Rose essential oils try.
